The Flea by Donne is an ideal example of the meta physical poetry. It deals with the theme of love but the image which the poet employed- The Flea is taken from the field of biology. The flea is a small insect which sucks blood from human body. This insect is used here as a theme for the expression of love.
It's an address to a beloved by her lover.he by this tries to request his Lady Love not to reject his proposal. The lover mentions that both have become one in the form of that flea.it first sucked his blood then her & in this manner both love become one.
He saying that whatever is denied by her has already happened in that flea.he considers the mingling of their blood as their marriage.
Such an explanation of the lover tempts her to kill that flea but the lover requests not to kill that.if she kills it,it would be killing three lives- life of the flea, his life & her own life.
But yet she killed that flea & making the colour of her nails purple. The lover admits that the flea was guilty because of his guilty blood, only her portion of blood was not guilty. But the lover is of the opinion that if she accepts his love, it would bring honour instead of a sin or an act of shame.
It can be considered as an example made by Donne because a poet uses hardly a biological images to deal with the theme of love.
